Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) announced plans to open the first public sign language learning center in Juba next week, in partnership with Light for the World and the South Sudan National Association for the Deaf.<\/p>\n

The center\u2019s establishment aligns with South Sudan\u2019s recent ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), according to CEPO Executive Director Edmund Yakani.<\/p>\n

\u201cCEPO is taking a proactive role in enforcing the UNCRPD and ensuring its optional protocol is implemented effectively and in a timely manner,\u201d Yakani said in a statement issued Friday and extended to Sudans Post.<\/p>\n

The center is scheduled to open its doors on May 14, 2024.<\/p>\n

Sophia Mohammed, Light for the World\u2019s Country Director in South Sudan, encouraged public participation in the sign language classes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge the public, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private sector actors to enroll in the classes to promote societal inclusion in communication and information sharing,\u201d Mohammed said.<\/p>\n

Nema Juma, Light for the World\u2019s Communication and Advocacy Officer, emphasized the center\u2019s role in advocating for disability rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis launch represents a collective effort to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities,\u201d Juma said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a step towards ensuring inclusivity for people with disabilities in all aspects of life, including meaningful participation, representation, and respect for their human rights,\u201d Juma added.<\/p>\n
