Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>South Sudan’s Information Minister Michael Makuei Lueth has come out to dismiss allegations that his government has been supporting rebel forces in Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

Makuei, responding to what he said were social media claims that South Sudan was sending weapons to the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front or the TPLF, said those claims were unfounded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an outgoing confusion in the social media on the participation of the government of South Sudan in one way or the other supplying arms to the Ethiopian rebels,\u201d Makuei said. \u201cThere is no way we can work against the government of Ethiopia because the Ethiopian people and the government of Ethiopia have been standing with us and without the Ethiopian people and the government, we wouldn\u2019t have been independent today. There is no way we can say we are supporting the rebels to overthrow the government in Ethiopia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The government spokesperson reiterated that the government of South Sudan stands with the Ethiopian government. \u201cIf there are any individuals who might be selling arms, then these are individuals who might have had their private firearms,\u201d he said. \u201cIf they are doing that then this is at their own risk and if the Ethiopian government can get hold of these people then they should be brought to book.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently claimed that foreign forces have fought alongside the rebel fighters in the battles in the Amhara region.<\/p>\n

Thousands of people have died and hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes since fighting erupted in the northern Tigray region in November last year and has continued to date.<\/p>\n
