Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Secretary-General of the South Sudan United Front (SSUF), Nyanthon Deng, called for total concentration on the Nairobi Peace Talks to pave the way for election through political stability.<\/p>\nIn an interview with The City Review on Friday, Nyanthon said the party was on negotiation going between the holdout groups and government delegations in Nairobi, Kenya, before discussing the 2024 election.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are with the elections conditional on peace and Security, but in our opinion, now we are focusing on the negotiations that are in Kenya,\u201d Nyanthon said.<\/p>\n
According to Nyanthon, before the elections, there should be a population census, and better security in place for free and fair elections in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cElection should be free and fair. And before the elections, there should be a population census, and security in the states. There should be conditions for peace in the states,\u201d she said, adding that elections are supposed to be conducted based on what is written in the constitution.<\/p>\n
The holdout groups, which were excluded from the 2018 peace agreement signed by political parties, have been negotiating with the South Sudanese government in Nairobi, Kenya, under the Tumaini initiative mediated by Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto.<\/p>\n
This month, the group issued a statement expressing their commitment to the Tumaini Initiative, while calling for a constitutional conference to draft a new constitution that addresses the social contract, governance arrangements, rescue program, and implementation modalities<\/p>\n
According to a statement obtained by The City Review this month, the holdout groups noted that they are expecting the Tumaini initiative to lead to a national constitutional conference in Kenya and South Sudan.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe expect that initiative will lead to a national constitutional conference in Kenya and South Sudan in two stages. The expected outcome of the conference will be the adoption of a new social contract; a constitutional text, interim governance arrangement with a rescue program, and implementation modalities,\u201d they noted in a statement while calling on the regional and international communities to support South Sudan in search for the lasting peace in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe strongly appeal to the region, the continent, and the international community to support the people of South Sudan in their search for peace and transition to stability and democracy,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n
