Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>At least 2,864 households have been destroyed and 18,178 people displaced by floods in Lafon County, Eastern Equatoria State.<\/p>\n

Lafon County Commissioner Marist Ukach said the floods had submerged houses and farms, leaving the locals devastated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a total of 18,178 people affected by the floods, their households and farms are submerged. The farms affected are in four payams, especially on the eastern part of Lafon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The displaced were currently being hosted by their relatives living on the highlands. Ukach said they were in dire need of humanitarian aid as many faced accommodation constraints. He appealed to the international community and partners to quickly intervene.<\/p>\n

The Commissioner also expressed his fears for hunger in future due to the destruction of the farms.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the National Ministry of Environment urged the communities to relocate to highland areas ahead of flooding<\/p>\n

Commissioner Ukach explained that the number of the displaced was likely to increase due to more flooding.<\/p>\n

Eastern Equatoria State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission Chairperson Augustine Okuma confirmed the displacement, saying partners were currently mobilizing resources for intervention<\/p>\n

He urged the National Cluster to work with State clusters in providing basic needs and water filter materials.<\/p>\n
