Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The European Union has announced an additional \u20ac96 million ($103 million) funding package to support South Sudan\u2019s long-term social and economic development.<\/p>\n

The funding, which will be disbursed over the next three years, aligns with the EU\u2019s Multiannual Indicative Programme (MIP) for South Sudan (2021-2027).<\/p>\n

It will be directed towards three key areas: building a green and resilient economy, enhancing human development, and strengthening governance, peace, and the rule of law.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe funding is in line with the EU\u2019s long-term commitment to South Sudan and its people,\u201d the EU stated.<\/p>\n

While welcoming the EU\u2019s continued support, South Sudanese officials emphasized the need for greater domestic efforts to address the country\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n

The EU reiterated its call for the transitional government to increase its investment in peace implementation and public services, including timely salary payments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EU has regretted the need for another extension of the transitional period. This decision for increased development assistance is not linked to the extension,\u201d the EU clarified.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe additional funding comes as a consequence of the global mid-term review of the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI),\u201d it added.<\/p>\n

Since South Sudan\u2019s independence in 2011, the EU has been a key development partner, employing a \u201ctriple nexus approach\u201d that combines humanitarian, development, and peace initiatives.<\/p>\n

The current MIP aligns with international development frameworks and has supported South Sudan in various areas, including climate resilience and human rights.<\/p>\n

The EU\u2019s additional funding aims to address South Sudan\u2019s significant challenges, such as poverty, food insecurity, and governance issues.<\/p>\n
