Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>This comes after the Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Ateny Wek Ateny, on Friday held talks with Huawei\u2019s Chief Executive Officer for South Sudan, Mr Wang Shibo, focusing on potential cooperation and investment opportunities in the country\u2019s ICT sector.<\/p>\n

According to a brief statement issued by the ministry, the meeting explored areas of partnership aimed at strengthening South Sudan\u2019s digital infrastructure and expanding access to information and communication technologies.<\/p>\n

Mr Wang, who assumed his role as Huawei\u2019s CEO in South Sudan two months ago, reaffirmed the company\u2019s continued presence and long-term commitment to supporting the country\u2019s ICT development, the statement said.<\/p>\n

The engagement marks a notable shift in tone from previous years, particularly following public accusations made in 2014 by then Information Minister Michael Makuei Lueth, who alleged that Huawei had hacked government communications.<\/p>\n

At the time, the claims reported by Radio Tamazuj raised concerns over cybersecurity, data protection, and the role of foreign technology firms in South Sudan\u2019s sensitive government systems.<\/p>\n

Huawei did not publicly admit wrongdoing, and no legal action followed the accusations. Despite the controversy, the company has remained active in South Sudan\u2019s telecommunications landscape over the years.<\/p>\n

Friday\u2019s meeting suggests a pragmatic recalibration by the government as it seeks to modernise its ICT sector amid growing demand for digital services, e-governance solutions, and improved connectivity.<\/p>\n

The ministry did not disclose specific agreements or timelines but indicated that discussions on cooperation would continue.<\/p>\n

Analysts say renewed engagement with major global technology firms could play a critical role in bridging South Sudan\u2019s digital divide, provided transparency and safeguards are put in place.<\/p>\n
