On March 20, SAF drone strikes hit Al-Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur, an area under RSF control. The strike, carried out using a Turkish-made Akinci drone at approximately 9:20 p.m. on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, targeted the hospital’s emergency department and caused mass casualties.

On April 2, RSF drones carried out what appears to be a reciprocal strike on Al-Jabelen Hospital in White Nile State, a core SAF-controlled corridor along the Nile south of the nationla capital Khartoum – and near the border with South Sudan’s Upper Nile State – killing 10 people and injuring at least 22 others in what appears to be a retaliatory action.

These locations are not active frontlines but rear-area urban centers providing administrative and medical services within each side’s zone of control. The strikes therefore represent deliberate targeting of fixed civilian infrastructure rather than incidental damage from ongoing combat operations.

The incidents follow a documented pattern of attacks on hospitals across Sudan since April 2023, including in El Fasher, Nyala, El Obeid, Khartoum, Wad Madani, and Kordofan towns, where both parties have repeatedly struck or occupied medical facilities, leading to shutdowns and long-term service disruptions.

According to sources speaking to Sudans Post, the strike on Al-Daein Teaching Hospital occurred at approximately 9:20 p.m. on March 20, coinciding with the first day of Eid al-Fitr. Witnesses reported a drone strike impacting the emergency department, causing structural damage and disabling key hospital functions.

A medical source in Al-Daein said the emergency ward was operational at the time of the strike, with patients present, including children. The strike hit a critical section of the hospital complex, damaging equipment and interrupting emergency care.

Graphic images reviewed by Sudans Post and circulating on local social media platforms show wounded children receiving treatment in the aftermath of the Al-Daein strike. The images are consistent with accounts from medical sources describing injuries sustained in the emergency and pediatric sections of the facility. Sudans Post has chosen not to publish the material due to its graphic nature.

Video footage shows the RSF-aligned “Taa’sis” administration’s health minister, Allaedeen Nuqd, documenting the aftermath inside Al-Daein Teaching Hospital. The footage captures extensive structural damage, with sections of the emergency and inpatient wards visibly destroyed and equipment scattered. Nuqd is seen moving through the facility while pointing to impacted areas, indicating the scale of destruction to core medical units. The hospital appears non-functional, with no active clinical services visible in the recorded scenes.

In a statement in the aftermath of the strike, the Darfur Victims Support Organization condemned the attack and said that “an army drone targeted the emergency department of Al-Daein Teaching Hospital, injuring about seven children,” adding that the strike caused “significant damage to buildings and medical equipment.”

“The Darfur Victims Support Organization condemns the shelling of Al-Daein Teaching Hospital by an army-affiliated drone. Witnesses told the organization that on Friday, the first day of Eid al-Fitr, March 20, 2026, at approximately 9:20 p.m. Sudan time, an army drone targeted the emergency department of Al-Daein Teaching Hospital, injuring about seven children, according to a medical source in Al-Daein city who requested anonymity.”

“The strike caused significant damage to buildings and medical equipment. The organization said it will issue a detailed report on the incident and holds the army fully responsible for targeting civilian objects,” the organization said in the statement.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates a significantly higher toll. WHO said in a a post on X (Formerly Twitter) that at least 64 people were killed, including 13 children, two female nurses, and one doctor, with 89 others injured. The hospital’s pediatric, maternity, and emergency departments were damaged, rendering the facility non-functional.

“WHO has verified yet another attack on health care in Sudan. This time, Al Deain Teaching Hospital in East Darfur’s capital, Al Deain, was struck, killing at least 64 people, including 13 children, two female nurses, one male doctor, and multiple patients. As a result of this tragedy, the total number of fatalities linked to attacks on health facilities during Sudan’s war has now surpassed 2000.”

“Over the nearly three-year conflict, WHO has confirmed that 2036 people have been killed in 213 attacks on health care, including Friday night’s strike in Al Deain. This latest attack also injured 89 people, including eight health staff, and damaged the hospital’s pediatric, maternity, and emergency departments. In total, more than 720 people have been injured in attacks on health care during the war to date. Beyond the devastating human toll, attacks on health care have immediate and long-term consequences for communities already in desperate need of both emergency and routine medical services. Al Deain Teaching Hospital is currently non-functional due to the extensive damage caused by the attack, resulting in a critical interruption of essential medical services.”

“WHO is supporting local health partners to help fill urgent gaps by scaling up capacity at other health facilities. This includes strengthening primary health care services to provide outpatient, pediatric, and obstetric care; increasing capacity to treat the injured; and deploying trauma care supplies and essential medicines. Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted.”

“The time has come to de-escalate the conflict in Sudan and ensure the protection of civilians, health workers, and humanitarians. Health care should never be a target. Peace is the best medicine. Al-Daein Teaching Hospital served as a primary healthcare facility for the city and surrounding areas. Its destruction has left a large population without access to emergency and routine medical services,” the WHO head said.

The RSF in a statement framed the strike as a deliberate aerial attack by the SAF targeting a functioning civilian medical facility deep inside RSF-controlled territory. The group presented the strike as part of a broader pattern of SAF aerial operations against urban infrastructure in Darfur, where RSF maintains territorial control and civilian density remains high.

“In a new crime added to its bloody record, the army of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood group on Friday targeted the emergency department of Al-Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur State using a Turkish-made “Akinci” drone, resulting in material damage and losses that are still being assessed.”

“The Rapid Support Forces strongly condemn this sinful aggression in the strongest terms, affirming that the attack represents a systematic pattern against civilians and civilian objects, foremost among them healthcare facilities, in a grave and explicit violation of the rules of international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions which guarantee full protection for medical facilities and their staff. This act constitutes a fully-fledged war crime that warrants international criminal accountability.”

“This attack, which occurred on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, also reveals that its perpetrators are devoid of any moral or humanitarian restraint and shows blatant disregard for the sanctity of holidays, sacred values, and human principles,” reads part of the RSF’s statement.

Legal advocacy group Emergency Lawyers framed the incident within international humanitarian law, identifying the strike as a direct violation of protections afforded to medical facilities and personnel. They also highlight the cumulative effect of repeated strikes on healthcare infrastructure in conflict zones.

“The Emergency Lawyers Group strongly condemns, in the strongest terms, the shelling that targeted Al-Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur State on the evening of yesterday, carried out by drones affiliated with the army, which resulted in a massacre that left dozens of civilians dead and injured, in addition to the destruction of vital parts of the medical facility and the complete shutdown of the hospital.”

“Al-Daein Teaching Hospital is considered a primary healthcare facility relied upon by thousands of civilians in East Darfur State and the surrounding villages and areas, making its targeting a serious crime that exacerbates the suffering of the population and deprives them of vital medical services amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions.”

“Targeting healthcare facilities constitutes a clear violation of international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, which guarantee full protection for medical institutions, healthcare workers, and patients, and criminalize any attack against them under any pretext. It is a war crime that warrants criminal accountability.”

“We affirm that this attack comes within the context of a dangerous escalation of attacks on civilian infrastructure in Sudan, which deepens the suffering of civilians and undermines what remains of the fragile healthcare system in conflict zones.”

“The Emergency Lawyers Group calls for the immediate cessation of all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, foremost among them healthcare facilities, and for an independent and transparent investigation to identify those responsible for this attack and bring them to justice.”

“We also call for ensuring the protection of medical facilities and healthcare workers in accordance with international law, and urge the international community to intervene to pressure all parties to halt violations and ensure respect for the rules of international humanitarian law.”

“We further express our full solidarity with the victims and their families, and with medical personnel who continue their work under extremely dangerous conditions, and reaffirm our commitment to continue documenting these violations and working toward holding their perpetrators accountable,” the statement said.

The SAF rejected responsibility and instead framed the incident as part of RSF disinformation efforts. Its statement shifts focus to a broader accusation that RSF has systematically targeted civilian infrastructure across multiple towns, citing a list of previous incidents.

“The Sudanese Armed Forces General Command has followed with astonishment the accusations circulated by the terrorist Rapid Support militia (Janjaweed) and its supporters, alleging that the Sudanese Armed Forces attacked Al-Daein Hospital.”

“The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) affirms that it is a regular force committed to international law and norms. This pattern of behavior, however, is characteristic of the Rapid Support Militia, which has repeatedly carried out such attacks, striking hospitals in El-Obeid, Dilling, Kadugli, Um Rawaba, Rahad, and Al-Dabba, killing hundreds of patients and medical personnel. The militia has also targeted water and electricity facilities in El-Obeid, Kosti, Khartoum, and Merowe.”

“Attacking service and healthcare facilities is a consistent approach and a daily practice carried out by this terrorist militia, which has committed massacres in El Fasher, as well as crimes against humanity, war crimes, and ethnic cleansing.”

“We call on human rights and civil organizations, as well as the international community, to fulfill their moral and legal responsibilities by condemning the conduct of this criminal militia, holding it accountable for violating United Nations Security Council resolutions, particularly in El Fasher and Darfur, and halting the sources that provide it with the weapons used to commit these atrocities,” the SAF statement reads.

On April 2, the RSF carried out a drone strike on Al-Jabelen Hospital in White Nile State, a town under SAF control along the Nile corridor. Mutiple sources who spoke to Sudans Post said the strike resulted in at least 10 fatalities and more than 20 injuries. The casualties included hospital staff and administrative personnel.

Among those killed were Dr. Hamed Suleiman, the hospital’s director, reportedly killed while performing surgery, and Dr. Ilham Hamed, the administrative director. Other victims included hospital staff and local personnel, according to local listings.

The Sudanese Federal Ministry of Health confirmed the strike resulted in the death of 10 medical and administrative staff and the injury of 22 civilians, along with the complete destruction of the operating complex and emergency departments.”

It condemned the attack as a “blatant violation of international law,” confirming casualties among medical staff and civilians and the destruction of core hospital infrastructure. It described the attack as part of a broader RSF pattern targeting “medical personnel, vital infrastructure, and humanitarian operations.”

Medical sources reported extensive damage to surgical facilities and emergency units, effectively disabling the hospital’s ability to operate. The facility had served as a key referral center for the area. The strike took place outside active combat zones, indicating targeted action against a functioning medical facility rather than collateral damage.

On its part, the foreign ministry framed the RSF strike on Al-Jabelen Hospital as a deliberate attack on a critical civilian facility in a stable area. The statement emphasized the targeting of medical personnel, the timing of the strike during a vaccination campaign, and the destruction of core hospital infrastructure. The narrative positions the attack within a broader RSF strategy aimed at degrading essential services in SAF-held territories.

The foreign ministry statement said:

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation strongly condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the treacherous terrorist attack carried out by the terrorist Rapid Support Forces militia using an offensive drone, targeting the hospital in the city of Al-Jabalain, White Nile State, on Thursday, 2 April 2026. This heinous crime deliberately targeted the only healthcare facility serving the population in the area, in flagrant violation of international law, norms, and humanitarian principles.”

“This cowardly attack resulted in the killing of tens of innocent civilians, including doctors and medical personnel who were performing their humanitarian duties, in addition to the injury of dozens of civilians, among them children, who sustained varying degrees of injuries. The attack also caused extensive destruction to the hospital’s facilities and medical equipment.”

The RSF did not issue a statement on the attack.

International responses were split along conflict lines, with selective condemnations reflecting political alignments. Saudi Arabia and Qatar issued statements condemning the RSF strike on Al-Jabelain Hospital in White Nile State.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attack as “a blatant violation of international law, international humanitarian law,” while reiterating adherence to the Jeddah Declaration of May 11, 2023, and support for “Sudan’s unity and its legitimate institutions.”

Qatar similarly condemned the strike, stating that the targeting of the hospital “represents a blatant violation of international humanitarian law” and called for “urgent action to protect civilian objects.”

The Muslim World League also condemned the Al-Jabelain attack. None of these actors issued statements regarding the Al-Daein strike in RSF-controlled East Darfur.

In contrast, the United Arab Emirates—widely identified as a political ally and arms supplier to the RSF—condemned the Al-Daein hospital strike but did not issue a corresponding statement on the Al-Jabelain incident. This divergence in messaging reflects the alignment of regional actors with opposing sides of the conflict.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and affiliated institutions have maintained engagement with the SAF-led government and mediation frameworks, while the UAE has been linked to RSF support networks.

The selective nature of these statements indicates that international responses are being shaped by political alignment rather than a consistent position on the protection of medical facilities.

For More News And Analysis About South-Sudan Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – South-Sudan.
