Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Public concern is growing over the Cabinet\u2019s decision to amend the peace agreement, with fears that the move could allow elections to proceed without adequate preparations or result in a further extension of the transitional period.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Council of Ministers resolved to draft a 2026 Peace Agreement Bill to provide a legal framework for holding elections in December. However, several provisions of the agreement remain unimplemented and behind schedule, raising questions about the country\u2019s preparedness.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Eye Radio\u2019s The Dawn program, callers expressed concern over both the amendment and the lack of visible preparations for credible elections.<\/p>\n

Wau resident David Magok said the current situation shows no readiness for elections. \u201cThere is no environment now for election. If you can see; there is no any sign that shows that people are going for elections in this country.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

He warned that repeated delays could be a tactic to extend the transitional period. \u201cThey don\u2019t even know what to do and they want to rule this country into confusion. They have benefit of doubt, when people are going for elections all of them will not come back. And that is why they always delay they make that tactics and they are almost to reach that level they say they will make extension.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another caller, Joseph from Munuki in Juba, said the remaining months are not sufficient to prepare for elections, citing lack of planning and funding.<\/p>\n

\u201cPreparations supposed to start and the budget of 2025 -2026 election commission budget is supposed to be increased and to top up the for the 2026-2027 budget and all these things are not happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that public messaging about elections is not matched by action. \u201cBut what is there is just a song saying we are going for elections. When the election became near, they put all the conditions saying this will not happen and later on, the extension is going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, MMT Chuol from Bor in Jonglei State said peace should come before elections. \u201cWhat South Sudanese need at the moment is a total peace, not elections. The same peace that they are playing with, this is what we need.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also questioned the broader direction of the country amid ongoing challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now going for a period without salaries and we have not said anything about the elections. I am even asking myself, if there is no peace in South Sudan, what could be the other options? This is a fundamental question each one of us must ask.\u201d<\/p>\n

The concerns come as uncertainty remains over whether conditions in the country are suitable for holding elections within the proposed timeline.<\/p>\n
