Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and South Sudan\u2019s refugee authorities have concluded a two-day sensitisation workshop in Rumbek, Lakes State, ahead of a planned registration exercise for Sudanese refugees next week.<\/p>\n

The training, which ended Thursday, brought together more than 35 participants, including Sudanese refugees, host community members, civil society representatives, and security officials from the police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and National Security Service (NSS).<\/p>\n

Dut Akhol Kuol, director general for protection and refugee welfare, said the engagement was aimed at preparing the ground for the registration exercise and promoting peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe came to conduct an awareness campaign to pave the way for the registration exercise which will start next week,\u201d he told Radio Tamazuj. \u201cWe are happy we were welcomed by the state government and we have completed the training with law enforcement agencies and officials.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said participants were briefed on the refugee registration process and the implementation of the Refugee Act and Regulations 2017, adding that security agencies had committed to support the exercise.<\/p>\n

According to Kuol, registration will begin at the offices of the Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) and will target Sudanese nationals seeking refugee status in Lakes State.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to provide official refugee identity cards which will ensure protection and access to services such as education, health and scholarships,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that biometric systems would be used to prevent duplication. \u201cIf you were registered elsewhere, the system will detect it. We will not register anyone twice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kuol said the exercise would run for five days and urged eligible Sudanese to come forward, while noting that other foreign nationals in Rumbek, including Eritreans, Ethiopians, Central Africans and Congolese, were not part of the current registration.<\/p>\n

Lakes State Minister of Cabinet Affairs Stephen Mathiang Deng called for strict adherence to the law during the process, urging security agencies to act within legal frameworks.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of us is above the law. Implement it accordingly so it protects you,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are all implementing the same law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Civil society activist Yar Mawat Adut urged host communities to receive refugees peacefully and support their integration.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have accepted them as part of Lakes State so they can be registered and accorded maximum respect,\u201d she said, adding that refugees would be integrated into local communities rather than placed in separate camps.<\/p>\n

A Sudanese refugee from Darfur, Habib Mohammed Abdallah, welcomed the workshop, saying it improved understanding between refugees, security agencies and residents.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has created a good interaction between refugees, the host community and security forces,\u201d she said. \u201cSince I arrived in Rumbek, I have not had any problems with anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local chief Sultan Mabor Alir Cipuounyuc said refugees had been peaceful and called for clear legal frameworks to govern their stay.<\/p>\n

\u201cHuman beings are governed by law, not lawlessness,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have accepted our Sudanese brothers and sisters to live among us. We were once one country.\u201d<\/p>\n
