Africa-Press – Tanzania. Vice-President Dr Philip Mpango led top public leaders, retired army officials, and wananchi on Friday in paying their last respects to the late former Chief of Defence Forces, General David Musuguri, at Lugalo Military Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
Other dignitaries attending the well-attended event included the Minister for Defence and National Security, Dr Stergomena Tax; ruling party CCM’s Secretary General, Ambassador Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi; former President Jakaya Kikwete; and retired Chief of Defence Forces, General Venance Mabeyo.
According to the timetable, the late General Musuguri will be laid to rest on Monday at his ancestral home in the Mara region.
Former Chief of Defence Forces General David Musuguri, aged 104, passed away on October 29, 2024, in Mwanza, where he was undergoing treatment.
Born in Butiama, Mara Region, General Musuguri served in the military from 1942 to 1988 and retired as Chief of Defence Forces, a position he held from 1980 to 1988.
He began his military career in the King’s African Rifles (KAR) as a private and later served with the KAR in Madagascar.
By 1947, he had risen to the rank of sergeant and served as an instructor at Kahawa Barracks in Nairobi, Kenya.
In 1978, General Musuguri led Tanzanian forces in the war against Idi Amin of Uganda following the invasion of the Kyaka area in Kagera Region.
The wars he fought in included the Second World War, the Battle of Madagascar, the Kagera War, and the Battle of Simba Hills.
