Africa-Press – Tanzania. A GROUP of twenty Tanzanian diaspora members from the UK recently participated in a training tour in China, organised by the Tanzanian High Commission in the UK.

The goal of the tour was to explore various technologies that could be implemented in Tanzania.

The tour aimed to encourage diaspora members to utilise available loans in the UK to acquire affordable technologies from China for deployment in Tanzania.

Tanzanian High Commissioner to the UK, Mbelwa Kairuki, told the ‘Daily News’ that his office had developed several strategies over the past year to engage the diaspora in development initiatives that benefit both the diaspora members and the nation.

“During this period, the High Commission held five online meetings with diaspora members, allowing people from across the country to participate. We also organised five in-person meetings in Leeds, Manchester, Scotland, London, Coventry and Dublin,” he said.

He further noted that these meetings have motivated diaspora members to take an active role in national development.

Some members have collaborated with the High Commission on various initiatives. One notable example is Ms Petronela Mlowe, an expert working in the UK government, who participated in a meeting aimed at encouraging Tanzanian entrepreneurs to sell their products in the UK market. She also provided strategies for entering the UK market.

A report by the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) showed a 60.52 per cent increase in the value of diaspora remittances, with inflows rising by 20.41 per cent to 500,849 transactions worth 1.3 trillion shillings in 2022. This compares to 415,960 transactions worth 837.33bn/- in 2021.

The BoT report also revealed a slight increase in the volume of outflows, which grew by 2.28 per cent to 132,740 transactions in 2022, with the corresponding value rising by 33.12 per cent to 640.14bn/-.

In September this year, President Samia Suluhu Hassan highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the rights and entitlements of Tanzanian citizens living abroad.

During her working visit to China, the President met with Tanzanians, including workers, students and business people, emphasising their vital role in supporting both their families and the nation.

She reassured them of the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns and strengthening their connection with Tanzania.

“The Tanzanian Diaspora continues to make a significant impact and it is our duty as a government to ensure that your rights and entitlements are protected and enhanced,” President Samia wrote on her official X handle and WhatsApp channel.
