Honour Union milestone, Mwinyi tells Tanzanians

Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has urged Tanzanians to safeguard and uphold peace and unity as essential pillars of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

He said that as the country marks 61 years of the Union, Tanzanians should take pride in its achievements, including the prevailing peace and unity among the citizens.

“These are important values that we all have a responsibility to protect and preserve,” Dr Mwinyi said yesterday during a ceremony to lay a foundation for the construction of Kibada – Mwasonga road in Kigamboni District, Dar es Salaam as part of the celebrations to mark the 61st anniversary of the Union.

He noted that the unity among Tanzanians offers a broad opportunity for citizens from both sides of the Union to benefit politically, economically and socially.

The Isles President said that the prevailing peace in the country is the cornerstone of the progress achieved across all sectors. He added that the laying of the foundation stone for the Kibada-Mwasonga road and the implementation of other development projects are direct outcomes of the prevailing peace.

“I call upon Tanzanians to continue protecting and maintaining the prevailing peace so that our country can continue making progress…considering the fact that this an election year, let us all exercise our right to choose leaders and ensure that the election is free and fair,” Dr Mwinyi said.

He said that there is no doubt that in 61 years of the Union, the country has made significant progress in political, economic and social development, making the United Republic of Tanzania a model of Union success in Africa.

Dr Mwinyi said the citizens of both sides of the Union continue to benefit from the Union, in line with the vision of the nation’s founders-the late Abeid Amani Karume and Mwalimu Julius Nyerere- to bring freedom, unity and development to Tanzanians.

He expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for overseeing and ensuring that the Union continues to be strengthened by addressing its challenges through joint dialogue sessions, as was done by past leaders.

Mwinyi also thanked all the leaders from both sides of the Union for the way they cooperate in embracing and maintaining it. “It is our duty to continue fostering this cooperation for the benefit of the current and future generations.”

He directed Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to make sure that the construction of the Kibada-Mwasonga road is completed on time as per contract and at the agreed standards.

Furthermore, he said the contractor must ensure that he adheres to the terms of the contract and understand that the citizens are eagerly awaiting the completion of the project in order to benefit from the government’s commitment to advancing infrastructure development in all areas of Tanzania.

It is the responsibility of the citizens to cooperate with the Ministry and the contractor, including protecting construction materials, as such actions can contribute to delaying the progress of completing this project.
