Africa-Press – Tanzania. INDIA High Commissioner to Tanzania, Mr Bishwadip Dey, has said that the bilateral economic relationship between Tanzania and India is “excellent” and continues to grow steadily in favour of Tanzania.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam over the weekend during the launch of a new India-manufactured SUV, the Mahindra Scorpio, Mr Dey noted that trade between the two countries has increased from 7.9 billion US dollars in the 2023/24 financial year to 8.6 billion US dollars currently.
“This shows that IndiaTanzania trade is growing at a very balanced pace and, importantly, in favour of Tanzania,” he said, adding that Tanzania is now India’s second-largest trading partner in Africa.
He said the launch of the Mahindra Scorpio, one of India’s most popular vehicle models, represents another sign of the deepening commercial relationship between the two countries.
“The introduction of the new Mahindra Scorpio in the Tanzanian market is another aspect of commercial ties between our nations,” he noted.
“We are pleased to see technology and innovation from India that is useful and relevant for Africa, especially Tanzania, arriving here.”
The High Commissioner added that India also supports Tanzania through human capital development by offering around 1,000 scholarships every year for higher education and advanced training.
On his part, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GF Automobile Company, Mr Mehboob Karmal, said the firm has sold 150 Mahindra vehicles since it began importing them more than a year ago.
“Next year, we plan to introduce electric vehicles starting in January and we also aim to begin assembling Mahindra vehicles locally,” he revealed, noting that the move will lower costs and create more than 80 jobs for Tanzanians.
