Africa-Press – Tanzania. IN a move aimed at enhancing transport connectivity in northern Unguja, the Zanzibar government has announced plans to construct a modern bridge at Panga Tupu, spanning nearly 100 metres.

The project is expected to ease travel between Mangapwani and Mahonda, significantly improving daily commutes for residents and students in the area.

Zanzibar Minister for Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, Dr Khalid Salum Mohamed, unveiled the plans during an inspection tour of key road projects in the Mangapwani area of North B Region.

He said that the bridge will offer a reliable and efficient link between communities and help resolve longstanding mobility challenges.

Dr Khalid also commended the progress of ongoing roadworks in the region, particularly the 19-kilometre stretch from Kitope to Kidimni, noting that construction is proceeding at a commendable pace.

Addressing the public, the minister urged residents to refrain from constructing buildings too close to roadways or road reserve areas, warning that any such structures will not be eligible for compensation.

Minister Khalid also toured newly built, modern resettlement houses constructed by Orkun as part of compensation efforts for those affected by development works.

The Director of Orkun Zanzibar, Mr Mustafa Tabakoglu, pledged that his company would continue to build modern, high-quality roads to ensure long-term benefits for the people. Orkun is a construction company from Turkey.

Residents in the area, such as Husssein Ali- a petty farmer in the villages, expressed their appreciation to the eighth phase government under President Hussein Mwinyi for prioritising infrastructure projects that directly impact their everyday lives.
