Africa-Press – Tanzania. MINISTER for Industry and Trade, Dr Selemani Jafo has announced that farmers across Tanzania earned a total of 2.9tri/- through the warehouse receipt system during the 2024/2025 farming season.

Speaking recently in Morogoro while opening the second National Conference on Industry and Trade, Dr Jafo noted that the system has also generated 85bn/- in revenue for Local Government Authorities (LGAs) during the same period.

The conference brought together regional trade officers, heads of industry departments and trade officers from district councils across the country. It was organised by the Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA).

Dr Jafo said the warehouse receipt system has delivered significant benefits to farmers by ensuring fair pricing for their produce and protecting them from exploitation.

“This system has transformed the agricultural sector. It enables farmers to sell their crops at competitive prices, which has improved their livelihoods,” he said.

He urged trade officers nationwide to oversee the implementation of the system to ensure its effectiveness across all regions, emphasising its role in uplifting smallholder farmers and increasing government revenue.

“I encourage trade officers to take responsibility for formalising trade through the warehouse receipt system within their respective jurisdictions,” he added.

In a related development, Dr Jafo revealed the government’s plan to construct 9,045 factories across the country. These will include small, medium and large-scale industries, aimed at boosting employment and industrial growth.

According to the minister, the initiative is expected to create about 6.5 million jobs and significantly accelerate the country’s industrial and commercial development.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Adam Malima, also outlined the region’s ambition to become the leader in cloves production, pushing the country to become world’s second-largest producer of cloves—after Indonesia.

He said the plan aligns with ongoing efforts to distribute strategic crop seedlings, including one million clove seedlings that have already been handed out to local communities. These efforts aim to promote both agricultural productivity and environmental conservation, particularly in the Uluguru mountain range.

RC Malima noted that the initiative is being implemented in collaboration with various stakeholders, with a total of five million strategic crop seedlings expected to be distributed to residents of mountainous areas to support both income generation and forest preservation.

On his part, the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) Chief Executive Officer Godfrey Nyaisa said the conference had brought together trade officers from all regional commissioner offices and district councils across mainland Tanzania.

He explained that the main objective was to foster experience-sharing and build capacity through technical presentations aimed at improving the officers’ performance and oversight roles.

“This is a unique event, and one of its highlights is the launch of BRELA’s new slogan: ‘The Gateway to Business Success’. The aim is to promote sustainable business growth in compliance with laws and regulations,” Nyaisa said.

He also announced that BRELA plans to introduce performance awards for trade officers who excel in formalising businesses in their jurisdictions, to encourage excellence and accountability.
