TRA Enhances Public Awareness on Consumer Protection

Africa-Press – Tanzania. As part of its ongoing efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and inclusive economic growth, the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), in collaboration with SICPA Tanzania, continues to engage the public on the critical role of technology in protecting consumers, ensuring tax compliance, and safeguarding the national economy.

In line with this the TRA has intensified its outreach by using the ongoing Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) to connect with citizens, create awareness, and showcase how modern tax systems work for the benefit of every Tanzanian.

Through this engagement, TRA seeks to demonstrate that tax compliance and consumer protection are not abstract concepts, but everyday actions in which all citizens have a stake.

ETS Project Manager at TRA, Mr Abyud Tweve argued that participation at Sabasaba serves as one of many avenues through which the authority provides the public with practical knowledge on how to identify genuine products enabled by TRA’s Electronic Tax Stamp (ETS) system, allowing Tanzanians to make safe and informed purchasing decisions.

Mr Tweve said yesterday at the DITF that the visitors would also get hands-on experience with digital solutions such as TRA’s Hakiki Stempu App, which puts the power of product authentication directly in the hands of consumers.

“This simple tool allows anyone with a smartphone to confirm whether excisable goods such as alcohol, soft drinks, and cigarettes are genuine, thereby protecting families and communities from harmful counterfeit products,” he stated.

“The technologies we have introduced are designed not only to improve compliance among manufacturers but to protect and empower the general public. Our participation in national and international events like Sabasaba gives us an important opportunity to have direct conversations with citizens — to show them how they can contribute to fair trade, protect their families, and support the growth of our nation,” he said.

Echoing this, the General Manager of SICPA Tanzania, Mr Alfred Mapunda added, “When technology is combined with public awareness, it becomes a powerful force for good. Through this partnership with TRA, we are committed to ensuring that every Tanzanian understands how they can use these tools to make safer choices, support transparency, and help create a level playing field in the market. We are happy to support Tanzania’s long-term prosperity and sovereignty.”

TRA’s engagement at forums such as Sabasaba reflects its wider commitment to working hand in hand with Tanzanians in building a culture of compliance and shared responsibility.

The Authority urges all citizens to embrace these innovations, stay informed, and play their part in protecting themselves and contributing to a stronger, more resilient economy.
