NATION HEROES’ LEGACY: Samia calls for patriotism

Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has called on Tanzanians to uphold patriotism and safeguard the nation’s peace and unity, as the country commemorated National Heroes’ Day yesterday.

She said the day serves as a reminder of the brave men and women who gave their lives to secure the nation’s freedom and safeguard its peace and dignity.

“As we honour our heroes, let us all together continue to remember our responsibility to remain patriotic to our country, to protect the freedom, peace, tranquillity and solidarity bequeathed to us by those who came before us, while working diligently for the development of our nation,” Dr Samia said through her official WhatsApp channel.

President Samia, who also serves as Commanderin-Chief of the Armed Forces, led the commemorations at the Heroes’ Monument at Mtumba Government City by placing a traditional spear and shield, symbolising national honour for the fallen heroes.

The national ceremony brought together various dignitaries, including top government officials, diplomats, religious leaders and citizens, united in remembrance of those who fought for the country’s freedom, defence and progress.

A guard of honour marked the solemn occasion with the playing of the “Last Post” bugle call, followed by two cannon salutes and a minute of silence, all paying tribute to the heroes’ sacrifice.

In line with Tanzanian tradition, Chief of Defence Forces General Jacob Mkunda placed a short sword at the monument, while retired Brigadier General and Ambassador Francis Mndolwa, a veteran of the Kagera War, placed an axe.

Diplomatic representatives also placed floral wreaths in respect of the fallen heroes.

Religious leaders from various faiths offered prayers for the fallen heroes and for the continued peace, unity and development in the country.

Speaking to the media after the ceremony, Ambassador Mndolwa called on journalists to highlight stories that promote patriotism and honour the legacy of national heroes.

“Journalists, be at the forefront of writing constructive news that recognises the contribution of our heroes. This nation has gone through a lot to get here, we must protect and cherish the foundation of peace built by our founders,” he said.

He urged Tanzanians to resist destructive trends, insisting that preserving peace is vital, a legacy built by founding leaders such as Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Abeid Amani Karume.

“The existing peace should continue to be preserved at all cost,” he said.

The event was attended by Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi, VicePresident Dr Philip Mpango, Zanzibar’s Second VicePresident Hemed Suleiman Abdulla, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy Dr Doto Biteko, former Prime Minister Frederick Sumaye, ministers, permanent secretaries, ambassadors and members of the public.

National Heroes’ Day is observed annually on July 25th to honour individuals who made remarkable contributions to the nation, particularly in the liberation struggle, defence of sovereignty and development of Tanzania.
