Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President Hussein Ali Mwinyi has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting women’s rights, citing strong policies and laws that safeguard gender equality, security, and the creation of safe urban and community spaces.
In his remarks when officially opening the 7th Global Conference on Safe Cities and Communities for Women and Girls, held at the Madinat Al-Bahr Hotel in Mbweni, on Unguja Island, he underlined that the Zanzibar government has been taking bold steps to strengthen public safety and eliminate gender-based violence through robust policies and the implementation of targeted strategies.
“Zanzibar’s development journey is anchored in social transformation under the Vision 2050 agenda, where safety and gender equality are key pillars of our progress,” said Dr Mwinyi.
The President emphasized that the government has allocated special funds to safeguard women, girls, and children, while also forming national committees to address these issues in collaboration with development partners.
He underscored that sustainable development cannot be achieved without ensuring safety for all, noting that security is a fundamental right and not a privilege.
He further assured participants that Zanzibar remains a safe nation, where citizens go about their activities peacefully, even in the run-up to elections. Dr Mwinyi pledged continued government efforts to advance gender equality, eliminate gender-based violence, and empower women economically.
He commended UN Women for its global efforts to protect women from violence and urged regional and international organizations to work together in advancing safe and inclusive cities for women’s development.
Zanzibar was selected to host the high-profile international gathering in recognition of its achievements in protecting women’s rights and promoting safe communities, and according to the Mr Masoud Ali Mohammed- Minister of State, President’s Office for Regional Administration, Local Government and Special Departments, “This honour reflects President Mwinyi’s leadership in promoting peace, stability, and gender-sensitive governance.”
