Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR presidential candidate of the Alliance for Democratic Change – Tanzania Democratic Alliance (ADA-TADEA), Mr Juma Ali Khatib has pledged to restore communal farmlands locally known as eka to citizens for agricultural use and sustainable income generation if elected to office.
Speaking recently at a campaign rally in Mjimbini, Pemba, Mr Khatib said that under his administration, the return of these lands would be a top priority, particularly for farmers and clove growers, enabling them to benefit directly from their land and labour.
“Reviving communal farms will not only uplift the lives of farmers but also contribute significantly to strengthening Zanzibar’s economy,” he said.
Mr Khatib also vowed to introduce interest-free loans for clove farmers and to stabilise clove prices, aiming to protect farmers from market fluctuations and ensure more predictable earnings.
“We will make sure farmers can access interestfree credits without and we will maintain stable clove prices so they can truly benefit,” he said.
In an effort to boost agricultural production, Mr Khatib pledged to expand clove nurseries and distribute free seedlings to farmers. He also underscored the importance of investing in local processing industries to increase value addition in the clove sector.
“My government will focus on establishing clove processing industries locally so that both farmers and the nation benefit from high-value clove products,” he said.
Additionally, Mr Khatib promised to launch special empowerment programmes for women, with the goal of promoting economic selfreliance and independence. He concluded by urging all Zanzibaris to participate peacefully in the upcoming October 29th General Election, and to fully comply with electoral laws and the guidelines set by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission.
Meanwhile, ADA – TADEA’s parliamentary candidate for Mtambile Constituency, Ms Amina Mohamed Ali, pledged to address key local challenges if elected. Her priorities include improving the welfare of madrasa teachers and tackling other critical community development issues.
