Africa-Press – Tanzania. NATIONAL League for Democracy (NLD) presidential candidate Doyo Hassan Doyo has vowed to curb government spending, including cutting MPs’ allowances and channel the savings into improving salaries for public servants, if elected president.
Addressing a campaign rally at Chief Kingalu Market in Morogoro Municipality on Tuesday, Mr Doyo said an NLD government would focus on efficiency, transparency and judicious spending use of public funds to strengthen key social services, especially healthcare and education.
“If elected, our government will reduce unnecessary expenditures while strengthening essential provision of services such as healthcare,” he said.
He explained plans to introduce a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to guarantee affordable medical services for all Tanzanians, with vulnerable groups supported through a community health fund.
Outlining health sector priorities, Mr Doyo pledged to allocate at least 20 per cent of the total health sector budget to medicines and medical equipment and to establish a national digital drug distribution system to ensure timely delivery of supplies to hospitals and clinics.
He further promised to address the shortage of medical personnel by recruiting more doctors, nurses and support staff in line with international standards.
The move, he said, would be backed by continuous training and incentives for health workers, particularly those serving in rural areas.
Other planned reforms include upgrading health infrastructure, strengthening preventive care and expanding public health education nationwide.
On education, Mr Doyo said an NLD government would guarantee free and quality education at all levels and reform the student loan system to make it fair and accessible.
He pledged to overhaul the national curricula to align with market demands, promote vocational and entrepreneurship training, improve school infrastructure, enhance teacher training and expand inclusive education for learners with disabilities.
Turning to infrastructure, Mr Doyo promised to modernise key road networks by upgrading major highways to dual carriageways notably the Chalinze- Morogoro, Morogoro- Iringa, Iringa- Mbeya, Mbeya- Tunduma and SegeraArusha routes.
He said the modernisation of the Chalinze-Morogoro–Iringa- Mbeya- Tunduma highway would ease cargo transportation, reduce congestion and road accidents and stimulate economic growth in central and southern regions.
“We are here today with three main goals,” Mr Doyo told supporters, adding “I kindly ask for your votes so I may serve as your president.”
He insisted that under NLD leadership, national resources would be managed prudently to ensure citizens directly benefit from the country’s wealth and improved living standards. Mr Doyo also urged Tanzanians to maintain peace and turn out in large numbers on October 29 to elect leaders who will bring meaningful change.
On her part, NLD’s parliamentary candidate for Morogoro Urban, Ms Halima Habibu echoed the call for peace, saying it remains the foundation of national development. She urged voters to support NLD candidates at all levels from the presidency to parliament and councils.
