Tanzania issues a pardon to all youth facing treason charges

Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has issued a pardon to all youth who were charged of treason in the country by following the crowd and protesting during the general election that was conducted on October 29, this year.

The Head of State issued the pardon when inaugurating the 13th parliament today, November14, 2025, in Dodoma and directed the security and law-enforcement organs in the country, especially the DPP’s office to assess the levels of offences, and those who simply followed the crowd should be released and returned to their parents.

According to the President, most of the youth just followed the crowd and did not understand the gravity of what they were doing.

“Looking at those clips from the protests, you can clearly see that some of the youths joined just by following the crowd. They were chanting out of excitement and had no real understanding of what they were doing. So, as a guardian, as a mother, I am directing the security and law-enforcement agencies, especially the DPP’s office to assess the levels of offences, and those who simply followed the crowd should be released and returned to their parents,” the President said.

She added,” At times, youth get caught up in criminal acts simply out of excitement or peer influence. I recognize that many of the youths who were arrested and charged with treason did not fully understand what they were doing.”

Moreover, President Samia told the youth that the country belongs to them and no matter the challenges faced they should never allow themselves to be convinced and destroy it; rather, they should be defenders and builders of their own nation.

“Never allow yourselves to be convinced to burn down your own nation. Not even for a single day. Do not cut the branch of the tree you are sitting on. Do not accept that at all. I urge you to reject it with all your strength,” she said.

She further asked the youth to be guided by the spirit of understanding, inclusivity, self-correction, and unity.

“To my children, the youth of this nation, I want to say that this country was built on the foundations of peace and political stability. If we, your parents, had been persuaded to do the things you did, this country would not have the blessings and development you see today,” she insisted.
