ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has stressed that his government will continue to prioritise digital systems as a key driver of economic management, improved public service delivery and strengthened domestic revenue collection.
Dr Mwinyi made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with the Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology Ms Angellah Kairuki, and senior officials from the ministry, held at State House in Zanzibar.
“The use of digital technologies remains a key pillar in Zanzibar’s development agenda,” the President said, noting that modern systems have significantly enhanced efficiency, transparency and accountability in government operations.
According to Dr Mwinyi, digital transformation is no longer optional but a neces- sity for effective governance and sustainable economic growth.
He emphasised the need to strengthen cooperation between Union ministries and Zanzibar institutions, particularly in the areas of communication and information technology, saying closer collaboration will accelerate the implementation of strategic projects supporting Zanzibar’s digital economy.
Among the priority areas highlighted was the construction of a Data Centre in Zanzibar, which the President said is critical for safeguarding government data, improving service reliability and reducing dependence on external infrastructure.
He also stressed the importance of upgrading communication infrastructure across the islands and expanding access to high speed internet, particularly in public institutions and under served areas.
