THE National Sports Council (NSC) is expected to visit the 12 Regional Sports Committees in the third quarter of this financial year to assess the functioning of the committees and ensure that the committees are formed and are carrying out their duties in accordance with the law and regulations.
Regional Sports Committees comprise the relevant Regional Administrative Officer, the Regional Sports Officer, seven members appointed by the relevant Regional Commissioner, one member from each association or federation registered in the region as well as District Administrative Officers and all Sports Officers located in the relevant Districts of the region.
The Head of the Sports Development Unit of the BMT, Benson Chacha, said that the Regional Sports Committees are responsible for implementing the functions of the National Sports Council at those levels, including registration, management, talent development, infrastructure, coordinating competitions, etc.
Chacha said that the committees that will be visited are those of Kagera, Shinyanga, Simiyu, Mara, Mwanza, Geita, Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Manyara, Singida and Tabora Regions.
He also said that the assessment aims to see the readiness of the Committees in how they have planned to develop the sports sector in their areas to increase employment, strengthen peace and solidarity, mobilize communities to participate in sports, bring people together, and achieve the aspirations of the National Vision 2050.
Chacha said that the assessment will look at how the Committees have taken effective steps to strengthen good governance, transparency and accountability in managing the activities of Sports Associations and Federations in the relevant regions so that they can be run based on the national principles of running sports in the country.
