Africa-Press – Tanzania. The government has announced that it is in the final stages of officially signing head coach Miguel Gamondi to continue leading Tanzania’s national football team, Taifa Stars, following his impressive performance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament held in Morocco.
Speaking to journalists today, February 9, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda said Gamondi is expected to sign his contract at any time. The minister made the remarks after inspecting renovation works at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Makonda said the government’s decision was based on the remarkable capability shown by Gamondi after guiding Taifa Stars to the round of 16 of the tournament, marking the first time Tanzania has reached that stage in the history of the AFCON, despite him serving as an interim coach.
He added that the government has decided to appoint Gamondi permanently to lead Taifa Stars in preparations for and participation in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Tanzania will co-host.
