Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports has officially appointed coach Miguel Gamondi as the Head Coach of Tanzania’s national football team, Taifa Stars, on a two-year contract.
The signing ceremony took place today, February 16, 2026, at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The event was attended by the Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, the President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Wallace Karia, and the Government Chief Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Makonda said Gamondi was handed the the contract after guiding Taifa Stars’ brilliant performance during the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 (AFCON 2025) held in Morocco, where he guided Taifa Stars to the Round of 16 for the first time while serving as interim coach.
Following that success, the government decided to appoint him permanently to lead preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, which Tanzania will host.
Minister Makonda also stated that the government has granted the coach permission to recruit any Tanzanian player competing abroad to join the national team. He added that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has approved continued investment in football to help fulfill the dreams of many talented young players.
“Dr Samia’s expectation is to ensure this team becomes stronger and rises in rankings, not only at the CAF level but also at FIFA level. Therefore, Gamondi has a big task ahead.
Dr Samia’s directive is that if there is any Tanzanian youth anywhere in the world, he should come and fight for his nation,” Makonda said.
For his part, Coach Miguel Gamondi thanked the government for the trust shown in him and pledged to work hard. He expressed confidence that through cooperation between the government and TFF, Tanzania can be placed firmly on the map of African football.
“I am very happy and proud to be the Head Coach of the National Team for the next two years. I love Tanzania, and I believe we can achieve something special. I promise to work hard, believe in the team, and do everything possible to make the whole country proud,” said Gamondi.
Meanwhile, TFF President Wallace Karia said the federation will continue working closely with the government to ensure football in the country performs better, with the aim of promoting Tanzania internationally and bringing pride and joy to its citizens.
