Africa-Press – Tanzania. Tanzania and India have discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in various strategic areas, including defence and security.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi and India’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Bashwadip Dey, held in Dar es Salaam on Friday.
A statement issued by the Office of the Vice President said the two leaders explored how Dar es Salaam and New Delhi could enhance collaboration in health, water, education, as well as trade and investment.
Tanzania and India enjoy cordial diplomatic relations that date back to Tanzania’s independence, with India opening its High Commission in 1961 and Tanzania establishing its High Commission in India in 1962.
In 2023, relations between the two countries were elevated to a strategic partnership following an official visit to India by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
India has made significant contributions to various water projects implemented by the Government and has also played a major role in the health sector, including the provision of healthcare services, training and medical equipment.
India remains an important trade partner for Tanzania, currently ranking third globally in trade with the country.
Tanzania’s major exports to India include cashew nuts, groundnuts, pulses, precious stones and gemstones, cotton, cloves, tea, hides and skins, timber and timber products.
Additionally, Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi held talks with Qatar’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Fahad Rashid Al-Marekhi, at the State House in Dar es Salaam today, February 20, 2026.
