Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC) is expected to elect six new judges during its 25th session, scheduled to take place from December 7 to 17, 2026, with the name of Tanzanian Court of Appeal Judge, Deo John Nangela, reported among the candidates.

Judge Nangela holds a PhD in Law from the University of Cape Town, a Master of Laws (LLM) from SOAS, University of London, and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Dar es Salaam.

According to Article 36(3)(a) of the Rome Statute, ICC judges are elected from individuals of high moral character, impartiality, and the qualifications required to hold the highest judicial office in their respective countries.

To ensure transparency and adherence to high ethical standards, the Assembly of States Parties adopted Resolution ICC-ASP/22/Res.3, establishing a permanent procedure for the thorough vetting of nominated officials.

If elected, Judge Nangela’s appointment to the ICC’s bench of 18 judges, headquartered in The Hague, would be a major milestone for Tanzania’s international profile.

ICC judges hear cases involving war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, delivering rulings with far-reaching implications for the protection of human rights worldwide.
