Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Zanzibar House of Representatives Committee on Economy and Investment has urged fishermen and marine entrepreneurs in Chuini Ngalawa to remain patient as the government proceeds with plans to construct a modern fishing port in the area.
Committee Chairperson, Mr Makame Sufiyani, made the call during an inspection visit to the proposed site, affirming that the government is committed to protecting citizens’ interests while implementing major development projects for the benefit of the wider community.
He said the Zanzibar government continues to prioritise inclusive development by investing in strategic infrastructure aimed at creating long-term economic opportunities for wananchi across various sectors.
According to Mr Sufiyani, the planned fishing port at Chuini an area widely known for fishing activities in the Urban West Region, will significantly boost incomes for fishermen, traders, and other stakeholders who depend on marine resources for their livelihoods.
He said that the project is expected to transform the socio-economic conditions of many residents by enhancing access to better facilities, markets, and services within the fisheries sector.
The committee chairperson also reassured fishermen and residents that the government, through the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, has put in place clear plans to ensure that no citizen will be unfairly treated or deprived rights during the implementation of the project.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Hamad Bakar Hamad, explained that Chuini Ngalawa is the only location in Unguja that meets the technical and environmental criteria required for the construction of a modern fishing port. He said the facility will be equipped with advanced infrastructure to support fishing activities, including landing sites, cold storage, and processing facilities, which are currently lacking in many parts of the islands.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Ms Mboja Ramadhan Mshenga described the project as part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure citizens fully benefit from the country’s marine resources while addressing long-standing challenges faced by fishermen.
He further said that the port will open up new opportunities for youths, women, and entrepreneurs by creating income-generating activities linked to the fisheries value chain, given the strategic importance and popularity of the Chuini area.
In a related development, the committee also received a technical report from the Zanzibar Petroleum Development Company outlining ongoing progress in oil and gas exploration activities in Zanzibar.
The company revealed that it is currently in the early stages of conducting 3D seismic data acquisition, while also providing awareness and technical education to communities in areas where exploration activities are expected to take place.
Zanzibar has a rich history of fishing, which is a vital part of its economy and culture. The establishment of a modern fishing port in Chuini is seen as a significant step towards enhancing the fishing industry, which has faced challenges due to outdated infrastructure. The government’s commitment to developing this port reflects a broader strategy to leverage marine resources for sustainable economic growth and community development in the region. This initiative is expected to create new job opportunities and improve the overall socio-economic conditions for residents.
