A new initiative called Paza Mwendo has been launched to empower women filmmakers in Tanzania by addressing gender inequality in the film industry. The project focuses on skills development and capacity building, aiming to create equal opportunities for women who face significant challenges in a male-dominated profession. Africa-Press – Tanzania. WOMEN filmmakers have made calls for equal opportunities in the film industry following the launch of a new initiative aimed at addressing long-standing gender imbalances.
The project, dubbed Paza Mwendo, was launched with a focus on empowering women in film and documentary production through skills development and capacity building.
Speaking during the launch, filmmaker and producer Adorofina Shija said women in the industry continue to face deep-rooted challenges, particularly a lack of trust from society. She noted that filmmaking is still widely perceived as a male-dominated profession, making it difficult for women to access opportunities and establish themselves.
“The first challenge is the lack of trust in women filmmakers. Society tends to believe that filmmaking is for men, and this has made many women either hesitate to join the field or miss out on opportunities,” she said.
Shija added that while many women have the ability to produce quality work, they are often overlooked in favour of their male counterparts, further widening the gap in the industry.
Film director Amil Shivji, of Kijiweni Production, attributed the situation to broader societal issues, including patriarchy, gender discrimination and acts of sexual violence, which continue to hinder women’s participation in creative sectors.
He stressed that many women with strong potential in filmmaking are being left behind due to limited access to opportunities.
Meanwhile, Francisca Mboya, Director of the Ladies Joint Forum, said the Paza Mwendo project was specifically designed to respond to these challenges by equipping women with the necessary skills and confidence to succeed in the industry.
She expressed hope that the initiative would help shift perceptions and create a more inclusive environment where women filmmakers can thrive.
