The Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project Phase II (DMDP II) is set to transform Temeke Municipality with a 97.176bn/- investment in modern roads. The project, covering over 51.2 kilometers, aims to improve mobility, reduce flooding, and enhance economic opportunities for residents. With significant progress already made, the initiative promises lasting benefits for the community.

Africa-Press – Tanzania. A massive 97.176bn/- roads project is expected to transform Temeke Municipality, with 51.2 kilometres of modern tarmac and concrete roads under construction—unlocking mobility, easing flooding and boosting incomes for thousands of residents.

The works being implemented under the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project Phase II (DMDP II), cover more than eight wards and at least 20 streets.

Speaking earlier on Sunday, Temeke District Manager for the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), Engineer Paul Mhere, said the district’s road network spans 648.45 kilometres across three constituencies namely Temeke, Chamazi and Mbagala with the overall project implementation surpassing 75 per cent.

He noted that progress in Mbagala and Yombo stands at 32 per cent, as contracts for those areas were signed later in April 2025.

Additionally, the engineer said over 166 kilometres of roads in the district are already upgraded to either tarmac or concrete, with concrete roads offering durability, reduced maintenance costs and the capacity to handle heavy traffic.

“Our district hosts both a dry port and a major seaport serving East and Central Africa, leading to heavy truck usage. These concrete roads are a long-term solution, and residents are already seeing the benefits,” he said.

Chang’ombe Ward Councillor Caroline Henrich said six roads Igombe-Yemen, Songambele, Majimaji, Basra, Diwani and Mwakalinga have resolved persistent flooding that once disrupted lives and damaged property.

“Previously, rainwater flooded homes, but with proper drainage systems now in place, the problem has been eliminated. Property values have also risen,” she said, thanking President Samia Suluhu Hassan for spearheading the project.

She added that Chang’ombe serves as a key link between VETA Road and the route to the National Stadium, and the improved roads have eased congestion by providing reliable alternative routes.

Bora Street Chairperson Pius Kapungu said the area has moved past potholes and flood-related challenges, with new drainage systems improving living conditions. He added that street lighting will further enhance safety and the overall outlook of the area.

Majimaji resident Saada Salim said the improved infrastructure has revived business, especially during rainy seasons when access was previously difficult.

“We are now attracting more tenants and customers. The environment is better, businesses are growing and vehicles can easily reach us,” she said.

Another resident, Jimmy Mwakipesile, said transport has become safer and more efficient, doubling daily earnings from between 15,000/- and 20,000/- to as much as 40,000/- to 50,000/-

The DMDP II project is steadily reshaping Temeke, improving infrastructure while opening up new economic opportunities for communities.

The Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project Phase II (DMDP II) is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving urban infrastructure in Tanzania’s largest city. This project focuses on enhancing road networks to facilitate better transportation and economic activities. Historically, Temeke Municipality has faced challenges related to inadequate infrastructure, leading to flooding and limited access to services. The current road project is a response to these longstanding issues, aiming to create a more resilient urban environment.
