Africa-Press – Tanzania. PUMP prices for petroleum products have increased, with the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) announcing new indicative rates effective April 1, 2026, in line with monthly adjustments driven by global market trends.
According to a statement issued by EWURA on Wednesday, in Dar es Salaam, retail prices have gone up, with petrol now selling at 3,820/- per litre, diesel at 3,806/- and kerosene at 3,684/- per litre.
The authority attributed the rise to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which began on February 28, 2026, and have significantly disrupted global oil supply.
Additionally, EWURA stated that the situation has been worsened by attacks on oil production and storage facilities, alongside the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route, leading to supply chain disruptions and price hikes on the international market.
“This situation has increased the cost of transporting oil due to a shortage of cargo ships as well as increased insurance costs, which has directly affected countries like Tanzania that rely on imported oil,” part of EWURA’S statement read.
Following the situation, EWURA has directed fuel retailers to adhere strictly to the new price caps and ensure the rates are clearly displayed for consumers.
The regulator also warned of strict legal action against non-compliance, while assuring the public that the country’s fuel reserves remain sufficient. It urged consumers to use petroleum products prudently to minimize economic and social impacts.
