THE President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, and the President of Zanzibar, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, have today, April 7, 2026, joined other leaders and Tanzanian citizens in a special prayer held in memory of the late Abeid Amani Karume, in an event to mark 54 years since his death.
The event was also attended by Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba, alongside various government officials and members of the public, who gathered to honor the legacy of the historic leader.

The prayer was held at the headquarters of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) in Kisiwandui, Zanzibar, as part of the commemorations marking Karume’s assassination in 1972.
Abeid Amani Karume was a prominent Tanzanian leader and the first President of Zanzibar, serving from 1964 until his assassination in 1972. His leadership was pivotal during the Zanzibar Revolution, which aimed to address social inequalities and political disenfranchisement.
