Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has inaugurated 758 communication towers, new fibre optic backbone connections across 85 districts, and formally handed over the national fibre optic backbone infrastructure to the government.

The launch and handover ceremony took place on April 10, 2026, at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre in Dodoma.

The large-scale ICT infrastructure projects are expected to significantly transform Tanzania’s digital sector. They are projected to improve access to communication services, particularly in rural and underserved areas, enhance the efficiency of e-government services, stimulate the growth of digital businesses, and expand employment opportunities for young people through the digital economy.

Tanzania has been making strides in improving its ICT infrastructure over the past decade. The government’s focus on expanding digital connectivity is part of a broader strategy to enhance economic growth and development. Investments in communication technologies are crucial for bridging the digital divide, especially in rural areas where access has been limited. The recent inauguration of communication towers and fibre optic connections marks a significant step towards achieving these goals and fostering a more inclusive digital economy.
