Africa-Press – Tanzania. UNLOCKING sustainable financing for affordable housing has dominated talks between Tanzania’s Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, Dr Leonard Akwilapo, and Shelter Afrique Chief Executive Officer, Thierno-Habib Hann, as the country intensifies efforts to close its housing gap.
The high-level meeting, held on the sidelines of the Second African Urban Forum from April 8 to 10, 2026, focused on strengthening cooperation to attract more investment into low-cost housing projects.
Dr Akwilapo emphasised the need for closer collaboration between government and financial institutions, saying innovative and sustainable funding models are crucial in enabling more Tanzanians to access affordable homes.
The leaders also explored ways to scale up housing investments, particularly through financing mechanisms that can support large-scale developments while keeping costs within reach for ordinary citizens.
They stressed the importance of long-term, reliable funding frameworks to ensure housing projects remain viable and inclusive, especially for low- and middle-income earners.
The forum brought together stakeholders from across Africa to exchange ideas and craft practical solutions to urbanisation and housing challenges facing the continent.
Shelter Afrique, based in Nairobi, is a pan-African financial institution focused on advancing housing and urban development initiatives.
