TANZANIA has begun talks with France about efforts to strengthen its footprint in the global film industry.
This was reached during discussion between Tanzania’s Ambassador to France, Saidi Yakubu, with senior officials of the Cannes Film Festival in France to discuss ways of enhancing Tanzania’s participation in one of the world’s most influential film platforms, with a focus on expanding opportunities for local filmmakers and creatives.
During the discussions, Ambassador Yakubu was accompanied by Tanzanian film producer and director Jigar Ganatra, who joined the discussions with key festival executives, including François Desrousseaux, responsible for international relations, and Guillaume Esmiol, Executive Director of the Cannes Film Market.
The talks focused on strategies to increase Tanzania’s participation starting from 2027, including the possible establishment of a Tanzania pavilion, participation of local producers and actors, training opportunities for young filmmakers, and expanded international collaboration in film production.
Speaking during the meeting, Ambassador Yakubu stressed the importance of the film industry in driving economic growth, youth employment, and tourism, noting that Tanzania’s diplomatic missions will continue working with European and global partners to unlock investment opportunities in the sector.
The Cannes Film Festival remains one of the world’s largest film industry platforms, bringing together stakeholders from more than 140 countries each year.
