Tanesco adds 10MW to Nyakato Power Station

Africa-PressTanzania. TANESCO in Mwanza Region has added 10MW to Nyakato Power Station to enable all industries to run their activities without any problem.

Speaking in Mwanza City yesterday, Tanesco Lake Zone Manager Engineer Henryfried Byabato said the increase in 10MW was a result of improvements in power transmission infrastructure carried out by the public utility.

The increase in 10MW pushes the capacity of Nyakato Power Station to 20MW.

He said to boost power supply, the public utility planned to add power to other four Tanesco stations in Mwanza City mentioning, Igogo, Sabasaba, Nyasaka and Isenhi.

Mr Byabato said Mwanza South Power Station would be added with 20MW, making the area to have 40MW, Sabasaba from 15MW to get 30MW these improvements would allow Tanesco to make changes without disturbing electric power users in Mwanza Region.

“The completion of the project at Nyakato Power Station now Buzuruga, Igoma, Kisesa and Nyasaka has improved power supply in the areas. The addition of 10MW has improved supply thus there will be no problem even when industries increase,” Mr Byabato said.

At the time being the region has the capacity of producing 132MW, while regional demand is 59MW, thus the area has a surplus power.

He added that another improvement expected to be made by the public utility in the area was the use of concrete poles which were durable and lasted longer compared to wooden ones to improve power supply.

Mr Byabato added that the improvement of Tanesco was implemented in all regions in the Lake Zone, saying there were big projects going on in Geita, Kakola, Biharamulo, Bukombe and Kakonko where construction were going on to improve power supply.

Director of Mwanza 2020 Soap Industry Limited based in Buswelu in Ilemela Municipal James Mwaikambo said his industry was functioning properly since there was plenty of power to run machines.

“Previously we were facing power deficit, so production was low, but now we are sure of meeting our production target,” said Mr Mwaikambo
