Police: Operation for reckless drivers coming

Africa-PressTanzania. DAR ES SALAAM Special traffic police zone said it will run a special operation against reckless drivers during this festival season to curb road accidents.

Regional Traffic Commander, Police Assistant Commissioner Nuru Selemani, further said his team was well prepared for the operation, especially during the festival season(s) when traffic laws tend to be downplayed.

“We will have a strong operation in various places in the city to control drivers who violate laws, and we will also focus on educating the drivers and passengers,” he said.

He was speaking yesterday in Dar es Salaam, while presiding over a ceremony to wind up a training on road safety sponsored and organised by the Total Foundation in partnership with the Amend Organisation for motorcyclists (bodaboda) and secondary school students in Dar es Salaam.

The Assistant Commissioner further said the partnership was important in supporting the government’s efforts in reducing road accidents and saving lives of Tanzanians.

“All of us have a duty to ensure road safety and training on road safety to stakeholders is key in efforts in reducing the number of accidents in the region and to emphasize the issue of road safety is essential in the development of the country,” he said.

Earlier, Total Tanzania Managing Director Jean Schoepp, said they have been supporting such programmes, which educate students and bodaboda riders in Dar es Salaam and Tanga.

“The aim is to prevent or minimize road traffic injuries by providing road safety education to the group that seems to be at a high risk and yesterday, we concluded a training to 40 bodaboda riders and 20 students,” he added.

On his part, Deputy Director of Amend Organisation, Mr Tom Bishop, said the trained bodaboda riders and students will be expected to be ambassador in the public and further spreading the awareness to their family members and friends in their areas.
