Africa-PressTanzania. THE Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has issued certificates and licenses to 246 large, medium and small manufacturers after their products meet standards, to use quality standards mark.

Out of them, 127 manufacturers (equivalent to 51.63 per cent) were small scale manufacturers who focus on food products, lubricants, mattresses, cosmetics, packaging, footwear and construction equipment.

During the handing over of the certificates in Dar es Salaam, over the weekend, TBS Director-General, Dr Yusuf Ngenya, said the standard watchdog always grants certificates and licenses to manufacturers to use the quality standard mark after their goods meet standards.

Dr Ngenya said in the exercise, the TBS standard mark will help manufacturers compete and penetrate the regional markets particularly in the East Africa Community (EAC). With the TBS quality mark, the locally produced goods will not be again subjected to testing standards in the regional markets.

“TBS has been granting certificates and licenses to small scale manufacturers every three months, as a way to encourage them to grow and compete with large scale manufacturers. I thank the government for the opportunity of serving small scale manufacturers freely particularly, when they want their goods to get TBS quality standard mark,” he added.

The Director-General further said: “Every year the government sets aside some money to assist Micro, Small and Medium-sized Entrepreneurs (MSMEs), when they apply for certification of their products to acquire a license to use the TBS standards mark of quality. Some of them are not supposed to pay any fee due to their small capital,”

However, he said to be able to have their products certified under government subsidy, SMEs are required to get an introduction letter from the any near Small Industries Development Organization (SIDO) office. It is important to ensure that the letter clearly describes exactly what the entrepreneur is doing.

Expounding further he said for the past three years the government has spent more than 727mil/- to support in MSMEs certifications.

Elaborating, Dr Ngenya urged small scale manufacturers to become TBS ambassadors to encourage other entrepreneurs to make sure their goods get a quality standard mark from the standard watchdog.

“Make sure you continue producing goods with the highest quality and which adhere to the certificates and licences granted to you… today TBS will be conducting impromptu inspections to see if your products meet the required standards,” he said.

On his part, the Amir Hamza (T) Limited Executive Director, Amir Hamza thanked TBS for handing them ISO 22000:2018 certification as it will build customer’s confidence on their ability to control any food safety hazards.

In the meantime, TBS registered about 3,295 business premises that deal with food and cosmetic products as well as registering more than 642 food and cosmetic products.
