Africa-PressTanzania. ZANZIBAR government said it is well organized to ensure that the newlybuilt passenger lounge at the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport provides better services that adhere to measures against Covid-19 that is currently ravaging the world.

The newly-built passenger lounge has started providing services on trial after its recent completion.

Works, Communications and Transport Minister Rahma Kassim Ali said they are organized to offer services efficiently to visitors, including tourists. She said the passenger lounge construction project for airport’s Terminal III is mainly intended to boost communication sector and offer services to the arrivals and departures.

“The Passenger lounge is a mirror of the country and it is our great hope that it will provide services efficiently by meeting international standards,” she sated.

Zanzibar’s Health, Social Welfare, the Elderly, Gender and Children Minister Nassor Ahmed Mazrui also stressed that his docket will ensure that health measures are instituted to protect travelers from various infectious diseases.

He said during the current third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic the government is taking precautionary measures by using modern facilities.

“The health ministry is well prepared to offer modern services for protection against various diseases including the Coronavirus,” he noted.

On her part, Minister of State in the FirstVice President’s Office, Dr Saada Mkuya Salum, directed staff at the airport to strengthen efforts to curb drug trafficking through the airport with the use of modern tools.

She said the airport is the main gateway for visitors, calling for efforts to be made, including crafting strategies to ensure that the airport is not used for trafficking drugs.

“Staff who will work in this modern building should be honest and strive to fight against illegal drug trafficking which is dangerous to the citizens,” she noted.

Permanent Secretary of the Works, Communication and Transport, Mr Hamil Bakari explained that the passenger lounge of the Abeid Amani Karume will have capacity of serving 1.6 million passengers a year and have a parking lot with capacity of accommodating three big planes.

The building has been constructed by the Chinese contractor- BCEG COM under the supervision of ADF Company from France.
