Mtwara district gets 241m/- for water projects

Africa-PressTanzania. THE government has dished out 241.2m/- to Mtwara District to enable the implementation of water projects in various villages facing water shortages, the District Commissioner Danstan Kyobya has said.

Mr Kyobya made the revelation here over the weekend when handing over water pipes worth 43m/- to district officials.

The pipes provided by Mtwara District Rural Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) are intended to rehabilitate and expand water projects in the district.

The DC said the money (241.2m/-) will be used to implement water projects in Mtwara District Council, Mtwara Mikindani and Nanyamba District Council.

“I urge district executives to ensure the money is used as intended to avoid unnecessary complaints from the ‘wananchi’ over shortage of water in their areas,” he said.

Kyobya thanked the government for dishing out the money to the district to increase availability of water to the majority of ‘wananchi’ in the district.

On the other hand, Mr Kyobya said the pipes provided by RUWASA will speed up execution of water projects in the district.

He commended RUWASA for the efforts it has done in availing the infrastructures as he directed the district executives to ensure the pipes are distributed to the water projects’ sites for smooth execution of the work.

He issued a two-week ultimatum to RUWASA to distribute the pipes into the intended sites for the rehabilitation and expansion of water projects to commence.

“I call upon the district officials including the MPs to oversee and ensure the pipes reach the sites for the intended work to commence,” he said.

The Manager of RUWASA Mtwara District Eng Hamisi Mashindike said the pipes have been purchased by RUWASA under the programme dubbed Payment by Results scheme in the country’s rural water sub sector.

Speaking during the event, the Nanyamba lawmaker Abdallah Chikota thanked the government for provision of funds to implement water projects mostly in rural areas.

He said some of his ‘wananchi’ have no access to clean and safe water, adding that the money dished out by the government will help increase water availability for the citizens in Nanyamba.
