Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA Football Federation (TFF) has passed amendments that turn the First Division League (FDL) into Championship and the Second Division League into First League.
The two terms will be officially implemented in the 2021/22 league season, according to the country’s football governing body.
This was confirmed by the federation’s Legal, Media and Marketing Director Boniface Wambura who said the move to rebrand the names was reached to attract sponsors to bankroll the two leagues.
Meanwhile Ihefu coach Zuberi Katwila said he will stay at the club to lead their race to regain the Premier League place in the 2022/23 season.
The Mbarali-based outfits were relegated to the First Division League (FDL) last season after failing to collect maximum points which could have guaranteed them a league slot.
But, speaking on Tuesday, Zuberi said he is ready to start the championship life with Ihefu even though this will be his first time to steer a team which is not in the top flight league contest.
“Our discussions are going on well and what I can say is that the only difference which will come is that I will be coaching a side which is not in the premier league but I will conduct the same responsibilities.
“I know there will be challenges in the championship level to push the team to the top flight league promotion but I am ready to confront such setbacks,” Katwila said.
He added that to get promoted into the elite league is not that easy as such; one needs to have a complete team which is capable to win games and bag in maximum three points.
“Most of the players I had last season are the ones to be featured in the championship even though we will bring on board some new faces to simply make the squad strong and competitive,” he said.
Moreover, the former Mtibwa Sugar trainer narrated that pressure among his players will always be there noting that each game has got its own pressure to do well.
They finished last season on 17th place with 35 points which was enough to see them farewelling the premier league just one term in the marathon.
As such, they joined a group of other three teams which waved bye-bye to the league which are JKT Tanzania, Gwambina and Mwadui who will have to fight hard in the championship to come back into the Mainland Premier League
