PM orders review of police recruitment criteria

Africa-PressTanzania. PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to review the criteria for recruitment of the just announced 3,103 police officers, so as to give a wide room for qualified candidates.

The Premier discarded the criteria that applicants entitled for the post should be those who attended National Service between 2017 and 2020 only; instead he said, the recruitment should be extended to 2015.

“The criteria should incorporate all those who attended national services on a voluntary basis from 2015 to 2020 for fairness in job competition,” Mr Majaliwa insisted.

The PM added that thereafter, the ministry should shortlist and get the best candidates who qualify for the recruitment to fill the announced posts.

Mr Majaliwa was responding to Esther Matiko (Special Seats-Chadema) who wanted the government to review the employment criteria for the available vacancies.

The legislator said the 2017-2020 criteria will deny many from applying because the last massive employment opportunity for the Police Force was conducted in 2015.

Premier Majaliwa said the government will continue to announce employment opportunities based on demand from time to time.

Early this week, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced employment opportunities for 3,103 police officers after the government issued an employment permit.

Premier Majaliwa said the recruitment is due to the existing gap, as the number of members of the Police Force was declining due to retirement, deaths, dismissals and resignation hence there was a reason to fill the vacuum.

During promptu questions to the Prime Minister, he said the government has opened the door for importation of agricultural inputs, to address the shortage of fertiliser.

He said the fertiliser importation is among the short-term strategies being implemented by the government, as the world is experiencing the shortage of the product, Covid-19 being among the factors behind.

He said by allowing the business operators to import fertiliser, they will bring competition, thus, farmers will get the inputs at the best prices with a wide range of choice.

The PM called on the investors to set up more fertiliser factories in the country. He said, currently Tanzania has only a single fertiliser factory but said an investor from Burundi has started setting up infrastructure to construct the factory in Dodoma.

Mr Majaliwa said the government is working around the clock to ensure farmers get fertilisers ahead of the farming season, as it explores possibilities of getting the product from countries with close bilateral relations.

In another development, Mr Majaliwa said the government will apply all means possible to control livestock theft and ensure the marking in livestock maintains its quality and standard, to meet the local and international markets.

He said the government has decided to discard applying hot iron branding on livestock, instead, embrace fixing an ear tag which has all details thus control theft and retain the quality of skin.

Moreover, he said, the government has also removed levies which were paid when a livestock, especially cattle, loses an ear tag for replacement.
