Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Mr Amos Makalla has ordered all petty traders who conduct businesses in informal places including walkways and road reserves to be relocated to other open areas.
The RC issued the directives on Thursday during his visit to Kariakoo market where he talked to traders at Msimbazi area.
He said that petty traders who block walkways and road reserves have been causing chaos to pedestrians and hence source of accidents in the region.
Mr Makalla noted that, the directives are not only to petty traders at Kariakoo but all in Dar es Salaam region.
He further directed Ilala District Commissioner Ng’wilabuzu Ludigija and the chairperson of the petty traders association Stephen Sinde to devise a strategy of relocating petty traders at Msimbazi Kariakoo to Machinga complex which has capacity to accommodate 2,000 traders.
He said the area designated for petty traders would allow them to carry out their businesses comfortably without obstructing pedestrians.
“I am directing the DC to hold meeting with petty traders and identify areas where they can be relocated because sideways are not formal areas for conducting business … they have been causing nuisance to pedestrians,” he insisted.
Mr Makalla said basing on his observation, arranging merchandise on walkways have been bothering pedestrians and the issue need to be addressed to improve the region’s surroundings.
“I am doing all these in order to improve the scenery of our region,” he stressed.
In addition, Mr Makalla also instructed the district authorities to look into possibilities of either closing or open some streets in Kariakoo so that they can accommodate some of the petty traders to allow them to earn living.
“If this option will work out and traders conduct their businesses in a peaceful manner which will not annoy pedestrians, this will be great,” he said.
During the meeting, some of the petty traders confessed to invade walkways but they have accepted the idea of being relocated to designated areas.
