Africa-PressTanzania. GEITA Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has collaborated with the Geita Regional Commissioner’s Office as well as the Medical Association of Tanzania to support free public medical check-up for Geita residents for three days.

Making the revelation here yesterday, the Medical Association of Tanzania President, Dr Shadrack Mwaibambe said the exercise that started on 27th September was concluded yesterday.

He further said such free health service offer to the public is a routine exercise they run ahead of their annual conferences, adding: “The Medical Association of Tanzania usually has different rotations throughout the regions offering free medical services to the communities. This is my first time in Geita Town and I am pleased with the modern medical equipment GGML has extended to Geita Referral Hospital and it is supporting the initial screening of our patients. “Geita Residents should be proud of the GGML’s investment in this hospital because most of the equipment found is the same as the ones in major hospitals like Bugando and Muhimbili,” he said.

Commenting, Geita Referral Hospital Acting Regional Medical Officer, Dr Michael Mashallah also praised the support of GGML and other stakeholders in implementing different projects in the area.

“This is the kind of support the public would like to receive. Access to health services is very important because it can save lives. I thank all stakeholders for their support, especially the office of the Geita Regional Commissioner, Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), Medical Association of Tanzania, AMREF, CORDET, NELICO, Fhi360, MNH, BMC, ORCI, JKI, TANCDA, Maria Stope, MDH and SHDEPHA,” he pointed out.

On his part, GGML Vice President – Sustainability, Simon Shayo, said: “As a corporate citizen, GGML is committed to supporting the government in the delivery of accessible health services in Geita region. “GGML has provided 800m/- to Geita Referral Hospital to serve over 1.7 million residents living in surrounding communities to fight and treat diseases.

“GGML has been extensively renovating the buildings which are part of Geita Regional Hospital dating back to 1957 and provided them with different life saving medical equipment to enable the hospital to offer cardiac check-ups and treatment services as well as dental care.
