Africa-Press – Tanzania. VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Philip Mpango has directed the Tanzania Posts Corporation management to capitalise on digital technology so as to attract businesses, which shall attract more people to have trust in the state -owned entity.
The VP issued the directive in Dodoma on Saturday during the climax of the World Post Day held at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre.
The day, marked in style, had a theme: ‘Innovation for Sustainable Post’, which Dr Mpango said was the best because e-business was now the highest priority when it comes to postal services all over the world.
According to him, it was high time that officials from the corpora- tion embraced creativity especially on technology so that it could attract more customers and in the end bring an impact to the econo- my of the country.
Researches by KPMG and the World Bank, according to the VP, show that the increase of the economy, especially the Gross Domestic Income (GDP) per capita had significantly increased.
However, he said, there were key important matters that were to be considered by, among them, security of the products to be sent in different areas from customers, efficiency on service delivery, market demand as well as technology advancement.
Dr Mpango said that there was no need for Tanzanians and other business persons from outside the country to opt for sending cargos via busses and lorries while there was an advanced technology which could help them have friendly ser- vices.
“Tanzania is now among the countries listed in the middle in- come countries, therefore, the corporation needs to measure the services and see if they are on that status,’’ he added.
The VP further challenged the Corporation to rebrand itself, espe- cially due to the fact that its website was in English language, creating a difficult situation for local persons to comprehend.
He also used the occasion to direct the ministry to collaborate with the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) to continue keeping eyes on the Corporation so that it can em- brace innovation and contribute to the country’s economic growth and development in general.
Earlier, Minister for Informa- tion, Communications and Information Technology, Dr Ashatu Kijaji made an assurance that Tanzania was well committed to intensify collaboration with other countries from across the world to ensure that postal servic- es were adequate.
The World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 every year to mark the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
The UPU, which was started in 1874 in Switzerland, played a pivotal role in world history as a mediator of com- munication.
The organisation became a part of the United Nations in 1948. Way before digitalisation, sending let- ters through the post was the only way to communicate and reach the near and dear ones.
The purpose of World Post Day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries.
The celebration encourages member countries to undertake programme activities aimed at generating a broader awareness of their Post’s role and activities among the public and media on a national scale.
