Africa-PressTanzania. TANZANIANS have been advised to respect and emulate philosophies of the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere in order to speed up the country’s development.

The call was made in Pemba on Thursday by the acting Head of the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial College- Pemba branch, Mr Jasson Domition during the cleanliness exercise at Chake Chake Hospital, to mark the 22nd anniversary of the death of Mwalimu Nyerere.

“We decided to remember Mwalimu Nyerere by cleaning the hospital environment because he named three enemies of Tanzanians as ignorance, disease and poverty, therefore maintaining cleanliness is fighting diseases normally linked to filthiness,” Mr Domition said.

He explained that, the presence of the college, established in July 1961, was one of the commitments of the late Mwalimu Nyerere, although it was five months before Tanzania gained independence, Mwalimu Nyerere and his colleagues decided to establish the college.

Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial College helped the country to have trained people capable of leading the nation with required qualifications.

Mr Domition further said that, the college had various names since its establishment and finally it was named after the late father of the nation.

He explained that since the college was a higher education institution, it offers a wide range of courses, focusing on providing long and short training, professional advice to the public and private sectors, and conducting research conferences.

Mr Domition said the college has been organizing symposiums to enable Tanzanians learn and honour the founders of the Nation of Tanzania the late Mwalimu Nyerere and the Founder of the Government of Zanzibar Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume.

“I call on the community and the various sectors to continue supporting our Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial College to continue hosting such events, which require public and private sectors cooperation to inherit and put into practice the views of the founders,” he explained.

Mr Abdulrahaman Said Mselem, Medical Superintendent of Chakechake Hospital, appealed to various institutions to also emulate what the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial College- Pemba Branch has done, by cleaning up the hospital premises.

Mr Mselem said that they were grateful to the lecturers and students of the College for cooperating with them to clean the hospital as it is a place where regular hygiene is required due to the interaction of various people who go to seek medical services.

“I commend the leadership of the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial College for deciding to clean the hospital premises. Let us maintain our cooperation for the development of our country and its people,” he said.

Tibirinzi Ward Councilor Ms Fatma Khamis Juma also commended the leadership of the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial College for participating in honoring the founder of the nation by cleaning the Chake Chake Hospital.

She urged Tanzanians to continue honouring Mwalimu Nyerere by continuing to fight against the three enemies of development named ignorance, disease and poverty.
