Africa-PressTanzania. THE government has set aside 41.8bn/ to connect electricity to 125 remaining villages to ease electricity woes in Rukwa.

Tanesco’s Rukwa acting Region Manager, Eng Danford Yungu, said here, during the Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) held here in municipality recently under the chairmanship of Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Joseph Mkirikiti.

“The remaining 125 villages will be connected to electricity during round two of the third phase of rural electrification programme,” Eng Yungu said.

The region has 339 villages out of which 184 equivalent to 54.3 per cent have been electrified under Rural Energy Agency (REA) programme. The villages to be benefited are 55 in Sumbawanga, 47 in Kalambo and 23 in Nkasi. Two contractors, JV Pomy Engineering and Qwihaya General Enterprises, have been contracted to undertake the project for 18 months at 41.83bn/-.

“The execution of the project started in August under supervision of consultant engineer Mercados—Aries International in cooperation with Tanesco.

“The contractor is currently undertaking detail survey and network design whose implementation works has so far reached 60 per cent,” he said.

The RC, Mr Mkirikiti, urged REA to ensure the remaining 125 villages are provided with electricity as contractual schedule.

The government plan is to ensure all remaining villages are provided with power in the round two of the third phase rural electrification project at over 1.2tri/- to ease electricity woes countrywide.
