Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, has called on Muslims and members of the public to join efforts in the fight against child abuse and violence against women because the acts are against religious teachings.

The Isle President made the call here yesterday at the opening of a three day preach gathering for Muslims (best known as Ijtimai) which attracted Muslims from various East African countries.

“If you take the war against the vices seriously, we can have a stable society and guarantee women and children’s safety,” he said.

Dr Mwinyi urged sheikhs who are scheduled to address the gathering to inform the public on challenges of children abuse and violence against women because they shame the society.

“It is the responsibility of each of us to cooperate with legal organs in order to fight such evils in the society, ” he said.

He said the society has a responsibility of protecting children by providing them with education and good morals so that they can grow in knowledge and piety.

He said that all forms of violence dominated by sexual abuse against children and women have tarnished the good image of Zanzibar, saying all people must get involved to end the challenges as par religious teachings.

The Ijtimai normally attracts Muslims from across Tanzania, neighboring countries and beyond. They include ordinary citizens and clerics, where they spend all the days preaching acceptable behavior in life.

In his speech, the President said “You should collaborate with law enforcers to expose perpetrators of abuse so that our children, women, and other members of the public stay safe.”

The gathering was also an opportunity for Dr Mwinyi to remind parents and the community about responsible nurturing of children so that the country can have good citizens free of narcotic drugs and other criminal acts.

“Ensure children get the right education, which includes good behavior,” Dr Mwinyi said as he reiterated the call to observe health precautions to control Covid-19, “Hand washing or sanitizing and social distancing are still important to avert the virus.”

The Isles President asked preachers and other speakers at the gathering to continue promoting peace, love and stability in the country as he thanked organizers of the gathering, Fiy-sabili-LLAH Markazi Association for the good work.

Sheikh Khalid Ali Mfaume- Secretary, Mufti Office spoke about the importance of unity in the country and support to government programs, such as accepting to be counted during the planned national census scheduled for next August.

The coordinator of the Ijtimai Amir Hassan thanked the Muslims for the turn-up, “We should all be committed in promoting peace and unity in our beloved Tanzania. Let everyone preach love.”
