Rukwa RC irked over lack of toilet pits at district hospital

Africa-Press – Tanzania. RUKWA Regional Commissioner (RC), Joseph Mkirikiri has expressed his dismay over the newly built district hospital operating without toilet pits and safe water and sewage system for over a year.

The RC said he was compelled to react after visiting and inspecting the newly built district health facility whose construction cost over 2.3bn/- Mkirikiti accompanied by Kalambo District Commissioner (DC), Ms Tano Mwera, District Council Director (DED) Shafi Mpenda and members of security organs, started a two days working tour in Kalambo District.

The newly built health facility was officially launched by the then Rukwa Regional Commissioner (RC), Joachim Wangabo on June, 08, 2020. The RC uncovered that apart from the health facility running without toilet facilities, safe clean water and sewerage system, also the construction of maternity wards valued at 200m/- has stalled.

“This is disgusting and shocking for the hospital operating for one year without having any toilet facility and water sewarage system… “This is unacceptable and unthinkable…. Worse still, all the money amounting to 300m/- allocated for the construction of a sewage system and toilet – has vanished in thin air, while the project has stalled,” he reacted.

He instructed the Rukwa Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Denis Bandisa to demote Eng Sebiga David and return him to Kalambo District Council to supervise the construction of toilet facilities and water sewerage system. Eng Sebiga was promoted and transferred to the regional secretariat in Sumbawanga from Kalambo District Council.

He also directed the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) to investigate the construction of the project. Earlier, the acting Kalambo District Medical Officer (DMO), Dr Raphael Semkoyo told the RC that construction of the district health facility took off on January, 27, 2019 through force account system with seven buildings.

The project was scheduled for accomplishment on June, 27, 2019 at the cost of 2.3bn/-
