Africa-Press – Tanzania. SIMIYU Regional Commissioner, David Kafulila has instructed regional and district officials to ensure production of cotton reaches 500,000 tonnes per year.

According to RC Kafulila, production of cotton in the region must be

implemented as a permanent agenda, as it was directed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Mr Kafulila said 500,000 tonnes can yield about 1.5 bn/-, saying the target can be reached if each stakeholders in the region plays their part effectively.

Speaking to the cotton farmers in the region Mr Kafulila instructed all institutions responsible for the production and management of the crop to ensure that the region achieves the goals for each district to produce between 75, 000 and 80,000 tons per year.

He said that the region has set a goal of producing 500,000 tonnes with each district required to produce 75,000 to 80,000 tons per year. He directed the directive to be implemented from the village level and ultimately make Tanzania one of the largest producers of cotton in the world.

Bariadi District Commissioner, Mr Lupakisyo Kapange said that in order to achieve the goal they have planned to have a special out rich team from the district that will visit farmers and know how much they produce per year in all 31 wards.

“We have planned to reach out to all cotton growers to know the quantity and quality of cotton they produce in the total area reaching 70,000 hectares. The goal is to ensure the region meets the goals we set for the year,” he said.

He ordered the officials to make sure cotton seed provided by the government reach farmers on time and also ensure that no sabotage occurs after it was learnt that some cotton seed were sold to companies involved in oil production through cotton seeds.

Vice Chairman of Bariadi District Council, Mr John Nugulile said that there are still various challenges facing farmers, including low prices for their produce. He asked for effective control in crop pricing by companies so that farmers can benefit.

He said that in order to achieve the goals set by each region to produce between 75,000 and 80,000 tonnes it is time for the villages share the amount of tonnes to make Tanzania the largest producer of cotton in the world.
